At some point in our lives we learn to stop expressing feelings and to push them away. We're taught that feelings such as hate, anger or jealousy are bad. It's not that we don't have these feelings anymore, we now ignore these emotions or even feel guilty for having them.
Ignoring feelings ensures they stay with us, pushed down as an unresolved layer of emotion, slowly building over the years. These layers then lie dormant awaiting a trigger to bring them back to the surface, something like an event, a particular situation or even an innocent comment.
